Winter Survival Campers:

I have attached two documents.   Click on #1 and #2 for the documents.

1. One that show the location of the Camp and the layout of the HQ area in very rough terms

2. The SPL handbook for this years camp, which your SPL can use to prepare himself and his scouts for this adventure. This document includes a proposed schedule for the three-day event. This document is also subject to change

You will notice several things that are required by the change of location for this year's camp and our attempt to "split" experienced and inexperienced scouts. We are still working out details of what each of the camps will look like, but you can expect the younger scout camp will be very much like what we have done in the past at Camp Morrison. The older scout "survival mountain" experience will be new. Here are the basic facts:

1. Dates: January 16 - 18, 2010 (over the 3-day MLK Holiday). Staff arrives January 15th.

2. Location: Round Valley, north of Smith's Ferry and south of Cascade. Right up against the south mountains of the valley, on private property

3. Format: Split older and younger scouts. Older scouts head up the mountain to survive (if they can) a couple of days and nights on their own. Younger boys learn to build snow shelters and participate in scout skill competitions.

4. Meals: Most are prepared in our "kitchen" - which used to be Camp Morrison's actual kitchen but will need to be a cook trailer or similar in this new location. The emphasis is on hot, filling meals since the boys are cold and exposed all day long (hearty soups, stews, chili). We can bring the younger boys in to a central location to feed them, or send food out (we did this last year, and it worked okay). Older boys' food will probably have to be transported up the mountain with a snowmobile. Boys bring their own mess kits, and have to clean them, so a wash station will be needed. We have access to water on the ranch, but will have to fill and work from large water containers for cooking and cleaning.

This is a start for your planning purposes. As I learn more, I will share it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Very important:  Chris Garvin and I need to know if your Troop is planning to participate or not. Please let us know by return email as soon as you can. Thanks.
